I don't mean to parse words here, but I just read this on Tech Startups 3.0: “We just completed tests at our test site this week and we will be able to produce electricity that is competitive with coal,” said an animated Gross Sunday evening. Endquote. I'd liken that to a claim.

Having said that, I truly wish Bill shining success in the eSolar endeavour and I have faith that Google.org and the others that plowed $130 million into it have done their homework. Namely, a comparitive financial analysis of the flat mirror, smaller eSolar model versus that of the traditional large parabolic trough solarthermal model. The basic concept being: "flat is cheap, curved is expensive".

Cynic has a right to be skeptical of me and eSolar. Many people in solar have made unbelievable claims. We are not making any claims until we have a plant up and running, which we will soon. But at that point, you should really consider eSolar seriously. We're working on a very important problem, and I think we have a good contribution to the state-of-the-art.

Matt:

Thanks for this follow-up on Google.org's efforts to make good on its philanthropic promises. I especially think the solar energy plant is going to be a winner. Nice to see some profit thrown in to the mix for good measure.
