    As opposed to wiring them to a hippie commune? I think the plan was always to wire whatever power sources we have to the grid.

    I'm not entirely convinced by the idea of a smart grid, yet. Especially after the East Coast power outage a few years ago, there is a need for a more reliable grid on a large scale, but bringing it to homes only makes sense for charging based on the current time and electronic meter reading. This idea of asking appliances where the power's going might excite some people, but, like home automation, a computer in your toaster is just more trouble than it's worth.
